“Everything was so unfair, and I felt so, so powerless, that if I felt I could have some power – in the album and in our music – it helped me a lot,” is what Victor Solf, the remaining member of Her, told The Line of Best Fit website recently. He was talking about the pain, and also the healing, that occurred through the completion the band’s self-titled album, without his departed friend and musical partner Simon Carpentier.
As a tribute to Carpentier, the album features several of the tracks the pair wrote and produced together, like ‘Five Minutes’, ‘Swim’ and ‘Blossom Roses’, as well as the first track they ever wrote together ‘We Choose’, among newer work like ‘Neighborhood’ and ‘On & On’.
All the tracks strike a balance between classic and modern soul craft, and maintain a dedication to sincerity and a belief in the power of music to overcome differences. You can catch them in action at the All Points East festival in May (see below).
